Applications, Matching Day, Life Changes, OH MY!!

It has been quite a while since I have posted here, and for that I am sorry. Life has taken over. For the last few months I have been overwhelmed with school work, working at Subway, and anxiously awaiting the matching results for a dietetic internship.

I haven't had much time to think about my diet, but now that school is almost over FOR GOOD (only 1 1/2 weeks of classes and then exams and then I graduate!) I want to really start improving the way I eat. After all... I am on the road to becoming a registered dietitian.

As I might have mentioned before, I attempted becoming a vegetarian for a year. It did really work for me, and I did feel tremendously more healthy. Unfortunately being a college student and dating a guy who just loves his meat got the best of me, and I did not keep up with it. I believe that being a "flexitarian" will be an easier feat.

So what is a flexitarian?
A flexitarian is someone who chooses to eat a mostly vegetarian diet but will consume animal products, meat, from time to time. For the most part this is how my diet is on a regular basis, but lately I have been eating a lot more meat because of my job at Subway and convenience.

Anyway, I know you are all dying to know - those of you who haven't found out already - about the results of internship matching.

Unfortunately, I was not matched on matching day. Although I somewhat expected it, it was still a hard blow to take. I considered my other options and began searching for internships that had openings for second round matching. Just when I felt like all hope was lost and didn't know what to do with my life... things changed.

Matching was on Monday April 5, 2010. On Thursday April 8, 2010 I was feeling really down on myself and got into an argument with my boyfriend, Ken, before going to work. I walked into work crying and everyone assumed it was because of not getting an internship. Part of it was, but it was really just everything overwhelming me all at once. My manager told the girl who was working 11-4 that she could leave at 2... she did not ask me because she figured I needed the hours. Luckily, the girl who was going to leave at 2 told me that I could leave then if I wanted, and I gladly accepted her offer.

Not 10 minutes after I got onto the road headed to my boyfriend's place from work... my phone rang. It was Lynne Hufnagle, the internship director at Henry Ford Hospital, calling to inform me that there was an unexpected opening at Henry Ford Hospital's Dietetic Internship and asking if I would like to take the position.

Of course, I was a giddy little school girl, asked her about ten times if she was serious, and OF COURSE I said yes!

So I am officially a dietetic intern at Henry Ford Hospital for the class of 2010-2011.

And as of May 8, 2010 I will have a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from Central Michigan University.

I couldn't be more proud of myself.

  1. I can't believe we graduate in 18 days!!! It seems so crazy! Time to be a grown up I suppose. :)

I'm still super happy for you about the internship. In November we will definitely go out and celebrate!! ;)
